The Science, Mathematics and Information Technology in Schools (SMIS) project aims at turning around the poor learner achievement in science and mathematics in selected historically disadvantaged schools in Port Elizabeth.
The strategy includes targeted high schools and their feeder schools and focuses on an integrated suite of specific interventions which cater for teachers and learners from grade 1 to grade 12. These interventions include the Family Maths Programme, Science Literacy Programme, Key-Teacher Programme and the Ripple Programme.
These are all well established Department of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (SMATE) programmes, but which have never been delivered as a coherent whole on an ongoing basis to specifically targeted schools, in this case the schools that constitute the Science and Mathematics in Schools (SMIS) project.
